The Holmes Family Story:
Charles was looking for the ultimate vegan protein source. Ken always brought back wild rice home to Vancouver Island after his visits with his brother in Flin Flon Manitoba. It was here Ken and Charles, entrepreneurs at heart, began investigating the possibilities of wild rice value added foods such as protein powders and food bars and were given a grant from the Saskatchewan government for R&D. After many months of trials with the food development center in Saskatoon, it was determined that wild rice wasn’t the ideal ingredient for what Charles and Ken had in mind.
This was when Charles and Ken were introduced to hemp seeds. They were amazed at the nutritional value and saw the industry was not making the best use of the bi-product from pressing these beautiful Omega 3 & 6 essential fatty acids rich seeds into culinary oil. This hemp cake bi-product was 35% protein and typically milled into flour for baking ingredients or thrown away as pig fodder. Ken and Charles put their heads together and Ken the millwright spent over a year developing their first milling and sifting system that created the world’s first hemp protein powder. Charles organized the money, packaging and marketing material and set about on his mission as the pied piper of hemp protein powder and the value of hemp seed as a food source into the stores throughout North America.

As well, Hempco has done extensive research and innovated products such as: Hemphuel – bio diesel conditioner and construction materials making use of all the bi-products from food manufacturing and being a leading example of sustainability.
